On August 13, 2009, five like minded women met and formed the Advocates for Homeless Teens and their mission statement: to provide a safe and secure environment in which homeless teens can live while attending high school in Irving.
Dr Lori Davis, Cynthia Faust, Sharon Johnston, Mary Oberlin and Judy Smith were appointed the official liaison of the Mayor’s office for homeless teens and set out to educate the community to the invisible tragedy of youth without a home.
Sixteen months to the day later, on January 13, the Irving City Council passed our request for $246,000 and a lot on Maltby to build a residential center for homeless students. Hopefully, La Buena Vida House will be ready for occupancy next school year.
Never doubt that a small group of committed citizens can change the world; indeed it is the only thing that has.
